Recipe: Rye Bread

I'm a total starch girl. You can take away my sweets, my veggies, even my meat. But don't even THINK of taking my potatoes, bread, and pasta away!

I adore fresh homemade bread, and I've wanted to make rye or pumpernickel for quite some time. I found this recipe online for use in the bread maker that is pretty easy and quick to make...and tastes DELISH! :-)

Here's what you need:

* 1 1/8 cups water
* 2 tablespoons molasses
* 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 2 cups all-purpose flour
* 1 1/2 cups rye flour
* 3 tablespoons packed brown sugar
* 1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
* 3/4 teaspoon caraway seed
* 2 teaspoons bread machine yeast

Put the ingredients in the bread maker per your user manual (mine says to do the liquids first). You can do two things: put it on the Basic cycle and let it do everything for you, which is what I normally do; or set it on the Dough cycle so you can bake it later, which is what I ended up doing (I wanted a regular loaf of bread this time rather than the square chunk the machine makes). When it is done, place the dough in a greased bread pan (you can sprinkle some cornmeal in the bottom for a nicer look). Cover with a warm, damp towel and let rise in a warm area for an hour. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.

Just a warning: You might want to double the recipe because I've noticed that hot, fresh bread tends to disappear before it has had the chance to cool. ;-)

Product Review: Soft Scrub Total Bath and Bowl Cleaner/Total All Purpose Cleaner with Bleach

Hello again! I'm back for another product review, and the category this time is household cleaners!

I don't know about you, but I am always on the lookout for a good universal cleaner. I don't like having fifty gazillion different products in my arsenal, you know? Well, I believe I've found the solution!

I received two bottles of Soft Scrub to review: Total Bath and Bowl Cleaner and Total All Purpose Cleaner with Bleach.

I will state up front that I am a bathroom cleaner snob and ONLY use Clorox Cleanup (the green labeled bottle...yes, I'm that picky). However, I was thoroughly impressed with the Total Bath and Bowl cleaner. First of all, and most importantly, it cleans well. It has a handy screen that you can open or close for foam or spray options. It also works upside down, making cleaning in the toilet a breeze! I give this 5 stars!

On to the total All Purpose Cleaner with Bleach...Oh my goodness. I can't say enough good about this product! It has a permanent station in my kitchen now! I use it on my counters after cleaning up, for cleaning up spills, wiping down the table, and even cleaning my cutting boards! It has a nice smell and features the same screen for the foam/spray options. It also works upside down! I give this product 5 stars as well.

What are you waiting for? Go get some and try it! :-)

Product Review: Purex plus Oxi

All right, folks! Time for another product review! Purex has outdone themselves on this one, really. I was already impressed with their detergent, but's LOVE.

Here are my likes:
1. The scent. Ooooooohhhhh mmmmyyyyyyyy...I think this is the best detergent scent I've ever smelled. EVER. I am a total scent freak and love to have pretty smells around me. :-) Usually with detergent I have to use fabric softener to get the level of smell that I like. However...just washing these clothes not only made them smell great, my whole house did too!
2. Amount for use. A lot of detergents want you to use quite a bit of the product; however, Purex's cup (on all of their products, actually) is quite small. A definite plus.
3. Stain-fighting power. I decided to put it to the ultimate test. I had a pillowcase that one of the kids had had a bloody nose on one night. So, I pretreated it with Purex with Oxi. I rubbed it in the stains and let it sit for about an hour or two, then washed it with bleach as usual. To my very great surprise, I could hardly tell where the stains had been! And for the skeptics out there, guess what? I have proof! ;-)

Isn't that just AMAZING??? No other stain-removing products were used for this test. :-)

Product Review: Honey Bunches of Oats Tropical Blends

We are huge fans of Honey Bunches of Oats here at the Stephen Carter household, so I was thrilled to see new products from them...and they certainly didn't disappoint. You get the same flakes and oh-so-delicious bunches of oats, but this time they have upped the flavor ante: crispy mango flakes, real coconut shavings, and coconut flavored clusters. I tried it dry as well as with milk, and quite honestly, it was delicious. None of the flavors overpowered the others, and there were plenty of granola clusters (which, let's be honest, is the best part!).

Not only do they taste good, they are healthy, too:

  • Four nutritious grains: rice, wheat, oats and corn

  • Heart healthy** (0g trans fat, 0g saturated fat, 0mg cholesterol per serving)

  • 10g of whole grain per serving

  • 9 essential vitamins and minerals

So...try them out! Let me know how you like them either as a comment here or on Facebook. :-)
